The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical within a musical that begins when a lonely "Man in Chair" plays a record of a fictional 1920s musical of the same name to cheer himself up. The story of the 1920s show comes to life, centering on a wedding between Broadway star Janet van de Graaff and wealthy Robert Martin. The "Man in Chair" narrates the comical events that unfold as various characters try to stop the wedding, including gangsters, a bumbling suitor, and the bride's intoxicated chaperone.
